Benefits of walking therapy:
Walking therapy has the advantages of both walking outdoors and counselling. It is calming, soothing and liberating. People often feel better immediately because it:
It's easy, natural and relaxing to be outdoors or out in a natural environment.
It doesn’t require a lot of eye contact and it is more comfortable to walk and talk side by side than in a
office.
It allows you to think clearly and creatively about your problems. Therefore, find solutions quicker.
It's healthy and uplifting because walking improves your health and energy levels, so you sleep better
and feel more energetic.
It's de-stressing, soothing, calming and it's nice to be outdoors or walk in nature. So you fret less about
your problems.
It's suitable for everyone. You set your own walking pace, from a gentle stroll to a brisk pace – whatever you are comfortable with.
The necessary boundaries of the counselling relationship remain including a mutually agreed focus for our work together and an agreement regarding confidentiality. Sessions can involve walking and talking, sitting, various mindfulness and meditative techniques and sensory awareness practices. There is no fitness requirement needed to benefit from outdoor counselling.
Confidentiality
Counselling sessions are confidential with the exception of matters concerning safety and professional requirements and I would discuss these with you. I receive on-going supervision, which is standard practice for all counselors and psychotherapists, in which I discuss my work whilst not divulging identity. With regard to outdoor walking therapy sessions, we will need to agree how to deal with occasionally encountering other people when we are outdoors.
